The Odd Life of Timothy Green

We took our kids to see the "Odd Life of Timothy Green" on Saturday.  Very nice movie.  It gives all parents some things to think about.  I would reccomend it if you have a chance to see it.

Have a great week!

Advisory Groups 2012-2013

Once again we will be meeting each Friday afternoon with our advisory groups.  This year the time has been extended to twenty four minutes to get more time with our groups.  We have added a new advisor this year. Coach Bob Sanger has agreed to help out with our program.  This will lower the numbers in the other male groups and get the numbers closer to the girls numbers.

In our first meeting on the second day of school, we discussed schedules and transcripts so students knew where they stood.  It would be a good idea to talk with your son or daughter about this information.

Last Friday we kicked off two year long activities.

1. Instead of doing one big food/supply drive for the food shelf like we did last year, we are going to pick one focus item for each month and have students donate that item (toothpaste, toilet paper, etc.) Our groups will take turns delivering the supplies so they will have a real feel for the good that they are doing.

2. Groups will take turns decorating bulletin boards in the school so we can learn more about each others groups.  There will be a rotation and we will do this throughout the year.

As a reminder the mission for the advisor program is as follows:

The mission of the West Hancock High School Advisor /Advisee Program is to create a support system for all students that nurtures positive relationships and supports academic success within our school community.

If you have general concerns about your son or daughter not specific to one class I highly encourage you to reach out and get in contact with their advisor.  I have witnessed several examples of advisors helping students get through tough times in school.  The point of this program is to help students and we want to make sure we are all working together!

Activities Update

Congratulations to the football team on their victory over Garner Hayfield Ventura on Friday!  The volleyball team begins their conference schedule this Tuesday at home against Forest City.  The Cross Country team will be in action at Newman on Tuesday.  The JV football team will play at Newman tomorrow night.  The varsity football team will play at St. Ansgar on Friday.  Please note kickoff is at 7:30 not 7:00.  Next year when the game is here it will be at 7:00.

There will be play tryouts this week! The times are Tuesday at 6:30 in the elementary gym, Thursday at 7:30 AM and 7:00 pm in the high school gym. It is my pleasure to welcome Glee Christ aboard as our new drama director. This fall's production is "Cooking can be Murder!"

All of our activities and schedules are posted at the following link: http://www.northiowaconference.org/g5-bin/client.cgi?G5genie=97&school_id=8

Any questions about scheduling should be directed to Mr. Peterson - bpeterson@whancock.org

Good luck to all of our extra curricular participants!

Welcome Back!

I would like to take a minute to welcome all students, staff, parents and community back to West Hancock for the start of the 2012-2013 school year! We are off and running and looking forward to a great year! Our theme for our students this year is "Do your best! Do what is right!" I believe if our students follow these two simple things they will be successful at West Hancock.

Some good news to start the school year:

- All freshman have new computers!

- Some of our seniors have the opportunity to participate in a new "Business Entrepreneurship Academy" at Garner Hayfield HS through NIACC

- Our stage got a face lift. It was all painted black and looks very sharp. The steps were also fixed.

- For the first time in a few years we have all returning staff members. Our veteran staff should feel very comfortable with our school and students.

- Our school is clean, shiny and ready for students. Thanks to Stacy, Al and Ed for all of their efforts this summer.

Success Center will be available every night from 3:30-4:30 starting Monday August 20th. Freshman and Sophomores will be referred. It is optional for juniors and seniors. Please know that if you want your student to attend and want a note stating that they did attend, we will be happy to work out a system like that. If your son or daughter is missing assignments they should be in the Success Center. If you have any questions, please let me know.

We know this will be a great year for our students, staff, and community! Let's all work together to do our best and do what is right!
